My first day of taking fresh flowers to the residents!

Today I took the donation of 120 beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers, wrapped in cellophane with red hearts, to four nursing homes. Two groups of residents in Phila and two groups in Montgomery County. I wish you could have seen the joy on the faces as they were incredulous that they were receiving such an unexpected gift.

I am picking up more bouquets on Sunday and then again on Wednesday. It is really a sin that many stores throw the flowers away at the end of the night so the newer and fresher flowers can be stocked on the shelves. The ones that I got looked perfect to me…..and to the 120 recipients of the roses, orchids and tulips!

What residents were saying

I love pachyderms. Did you know that there are African elephants and Indian elephants? I collect elephants and look at the stuffed animal that you gave me – another pachyderm to put on my bed. Do you knpw the difference between the African and Indian elephants? Sometime when you have some free time, maybe you could come back and we could talk about the elephants.

That lady in the next bed screams during the night. She was an Army Captain. She starts about 4 am and screams about 50 times until 6 am. It is really un-nerving for me. I do not get a good night’s sleep anymore. But what can you do? She can’t help it.

My grandson Kyle was killed in Iraq. He had this crazy idea that he wanted to join the military and jump out of planes and that is what he did. He was such a cute little boy, blonde hair and blue eyes.

My husband died in a flash explosion at the steel plant. Well, he didn’t die right away. He died four years later but he lost his life as we knew it when that accident happened. Can you imagine the heat of a steel plant burning your body in an explosion? My son is coming to take me shopping now. Did you ever hear of a store called Bozcov’s. I hear they have some good bargains there!

His eyes were crossed with sorrow. He kissed her cheek.

I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face

Jim sat in the stark nursing home hallway with his wife Alice – his bride of 42 years. Alice hid her face under a plaid blanket. I asked him if she would like a scarf. He asked how much it cost. Nothing, we have a gift for each resident. I wrapped the soft purple one around her neck. She didn’t react until I tried to put a heart decoration on her ponytail. She swatted her hand at me.

His eyes were creased with sorrow. He kissed her cheek.

Eight weeks ago, I don’t know what woke me up about 3 am…..well, yes, I do know. It was God. I looked over at my wife. She had a strange look on her face and there was saliva on her mouth. Oh, Alice….please, you didn’t have a stroke……
I got a washcloth, put it under hot water and rung it out real tight and wiped her mouth. ‘Alice, if you aren’t better in ten minutes, I am going to call 911.’

“I went to a small girls’ college near Pittsburgh,” she said.

Patricia,
How many days a week do you do this? I love this little elephant. I only had one “ratty looking” stuffed animal when I was a kid. It was during the depression. I love art and went to college to study art and that is a good thing. It helped me when I had my mental illness that I inherited from my father. When I was in the midst of it, I didn’t just sit around, I did artistic things, especially loved doing water colors. I went to a small girls’ college near Pittsburgh.

Do you have any costume jewelry that you no longer want?

Around Christmas time, a few of my friends donated some seasonal necklaces, pins, earrings and bracelets. The women in the senior living communities loved the bangle bracelets and bright assortment of costume jewelry.

So this is what I just posted on my Facebook page. Perhaps, you have some jewelry that you no longer need. Please nothing tarnished or used-looking. I can place the items in little boxes with cotton and I am sure the trinkets will be so appreciated! Thank you

Oh, another nice thing that the ladies in the nursing homes would love to have – your cast-off costume jewelry. It has to look new because of course, they are very fussy about what I bring in to the residents. So if you have any of the patriotic red, white and blue necklaces and bracelets, or the seasonal pins and clip on earrings or if you have any jewelry that is “small” for me to take – that would be great. The 11,550 stuffed animals that I collected over the past 3 years took up all of the room in my car and my basement. Time to move on to a new giveaway to the sweet ladies – many of whom do not have any family or friends that visit. Thank you!
